Teeth whitening

What is teeth whitening

Teeth whitening is a process which helps to remove stains and discoloration of your teeth. It can greatly improve your appearance by making your teeth whiter at a low cost than any other techniques. It makes use of peroxide based materials. It is the most popular among all cosmetic dental procedures. The enamel of the tooth contain stains which catches up stain. Whitening needs to be done periodically if the white colour of the teeth has to be maintained.

Cause of teeth yellowing

Yellowing of teeth is mostly due to chewing tobacco or using tobacco products, drinking excessive tea or coffee or due to old age. Stains inside the teeth are called intrinsic stains. These can be caused due to action of too much fluoride during childhood days when the teeth were in a developing stage. Tetracycline antibiotics used during second half of pregnancy period or taken by children under eight years of age can also cause stains. Teeth whitening is the most effective solution for stains.

How to get started with teeth whitening

Cavities in the tooth should be treated first before whitening otherwise the whitening solution can enter the tooth through the decayed portion reaching the inner parts. Receding gums can expose the roots. Whitening works on enamel layer and can not be done on exposed tooth roots. It also cannot be done on crowns or veneers.

The dentists usually takes some photographs of your tooth to help himself to monitor the progress of the treatment. The treatment may consists of 2 to 6 visits each of about three quarters of an hour. The teeth are examined to determine the mode and type of whitening treatment to be given. After examination the teeth are cleaned and then the whitening treatment begins.

Whitening can be done in the dental office or at home. For in-office whitening, your dentist probably will photograph your teeth, which will help him or her to monitor how the treatment is progressing. Whitening in the office may involve two to six visits of approximately 45 minutes each. He or she also will examine your teeth and ask you questions to determine the type and severity of staining.

If the whitening is made at home then the dentist may instruct you to use custom trays made in the dental office. It usually takes about 2 to 3 weeks. For home use one can make use of the available kits. But dentists should be consulted before using such products so that overuse or damage of teeth and mouth can be avoided.
